Health Fair Promotes Healthy Living with Free Screenings, Demonstrations and Entertainment

Washington, D.C., June 9, 2007 -- The Howard University Hospital’s (HUH), Second Annual “Summer Tune-Up” health fair on Saturday, June 9, was a tremendous success, attracting more than 300 area residents.

Despite the District of Columbia’s staggering HIV rates, the nearly 100 people tested at last weekend’s fair had negative results. HUH commenced routine, voluntary, HIV testing in all clinical departments in October 2006.

“We are thrilled that a record number of people took advantage of the free screenings,” Thomas Gaiter, M.D., HUH Chief Medical Officer. “The results of the HIV tests may be indicative of some progress in the District. Studies show earlier testing helps to decrease the rate of infection.”

Other free health screenings included blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, dental, prostate cancer, and body mass index. Attendees participated in health and fitness demonstrations, such as dance, yoga, aerobics; and enjoyed live entertainment.

The “Kids’ Zone” was also a major hit – packed from beginning to end with children of all ages, enjoying face painting and arts and crafts.

HUH hosted the second annual Summer Tune-Up in collaboration with sponsors WHUR 96.3 and NBC4.
